Bouncing with Style: Reverse Forgiveness by Sandra Beck, Motherhood Talk Radio

One of the things that strikes me on a weekly basis is how I can in one week forgive my ex-husband for his cheating and abandonment of me and then the next week I’m back to hating his guts and those of Bozo his mistress. Am I bitter? You bet. Angry? Totally. Able to let it go and move on….not so much.

What I have found with forgiveness is that it’s not really a one-shot deal. Now sometimes it’s because the original sin is aggravated. When my ex gave my child’s mother’s day card made in school to his mistress I wanted to rip his and her head off. I went into this crazy mommy spiral thinking how could Bozo as a mother accept that card? It created a litany of personal wrongs that whipped my non-forgiving spirit into full force.

But sometimes, reverse forgiveness just hits you. I hear this from my friends who were in long term marriages and relationships and their partner cheated on them and left. It affects both men and women. The cheating is bad enough but then to be left with your hat in hand is like salt in a paper cut. Many report the same things as I am expressing to you. There are good days and bad days with respect to forgiveness.

Forgiveness is an ongoing struggle – like laying off the potato chips. It’s awfully tempting to relax into bitterness. It’s quite frankly a whole lot easier being bitter than moving on. Being bitter is sort of fun at times. Mean snarky things come out of my mouth that make me and others laugh at Bozo and my ex. It creates a temporary albeit memorable fix. It’s a lot more effort to take the high road, be the bigger person and to let things go.

I think its important to not only teach each other that forgiveness is a process but also that forgiveness is not a permanent state of being- at least it was not for me. I have to admit I kind of expected the sun to shine down on me, angels to strum their harps and I would magically lose 30 pounds all because I had found forgiveness. Well, it didn’t and it doesn’t.

I guess what I am trying to say is that you need to be kind to yourself in your expectations of what happens when you finally “forgive” that person. Know that you can and probably will take it back especially when they do stupid things to you. Know that you can reverse forgiveness and then find it again. We are human and do the best we can. And it’s much harder to be on the forgiveness train than the cheater bus.

Don’t believe me? Check out Amazon and see how many books there are to help the person who was betrayed. Thousands. No so much information out there to help the cheater recover. Why? Because they had fun running about and cheating while the rest of us stayed home and raised the kids and paid the bills. I read the cheater posts but somehow it’s hard for me to feel empathy for their guilt that they spent the night in a five star hotel with someone else’s husband – especially when family trips are spent in the Holiday Inn.

Hmmm…See? I’m back in my reverse forgiveness bitterness mode. But thankfully I have an outlet like writing and supporting others in their recover journey. I encourage you to find a healthy one for you. Because, after all, you can recover, you can rebound or you can Bounce with Style.

Today we welcome Linda Franklin of The Real Cougar Woman and Shining Service Worldwide.

I was born inToronto,Canadaand moved toNew York Cityin my early twenties. Never having finished college, I worked as a secretary because that’s all I thought I was qualified to do.

Wall Street in the late 70’s was not a woman friendly environment but I used that to my advantage. At age 28 I walked into my boss’s office and asked to work in the firm’s trading department. He said yes, but it came with a very big caveat. He said, “make it or be fired”. That challenge made me determined to succeed and I did. I was the first Canadian woman to own a seat on The New York Stock Exchange and then went on to manage this leading investment firm’s all male trading department.

Then at 48 my life changed drastically. Due to a number of circumstances I decided to leave Wall Street. That transition was a devastating blow to my psyche. I didn’t realize how much of my identity I had attached to my work. Retirement had never been a thought in my mind and I had no idea of how to cope with not having a good reason to get up in the morning.

When I could no longer stand wallowing in self pity, I made the conscious decision to take back my power and my life. Over the next two years, I went on a quest to find the answers that would help me with my relationships, maintaining a healthy body, looking fabulous, starting a new career and filling my spiritual reservoir. That journey, as tough as it was, turned out to be a blessing. It re-ignited my passion and allowed me to get excited about act two of my life.

Wanting to share what I had learned I started a blog. People ask me all the time why I decided to call it the The Real Cougar Woman.

It wasn’t planned – it just happened after I started to read a slew of unflattering articles about women over 40. They were being called “cougars”, and portrayed as predators on the prowl for young men. This negative spin upset me and I wanted to focus on the many virtues of real women not the media’s idea of women over 40. So I coined the term Real Cougar as my way of celebrating our age, our accomplishments, our independence, and our passion for life. I make it clear that a Real Cougar refuses to be defined by the age of the man she chooses to be with. Today, three years later I am still doing everything I can to make “cougar” a designer label that women all over the world are proud to wear.

My best selling book Don’t Ever Call Me Ma’am! – The Real Cougar Guidebook for Life After 40 is helping me to expand my message. It has important information that every woman needs to read. I have also included inspiring stories from other fabulous females that truly warmed my heart. It let me know we are all together on this journey through time.

My newest initiative is “Shining Service Worldwide™”. This is my outreach to support women in the military. Like most worthwhile ventures it wasn’t planned. After receiving emails from military women who felt empowered after reading my blog – the path seemed obvious.

The Inexhaustible Resource by Sandra Beck, Motherhood Incorporated and Military Mom Talk Radio

by Sandra Beck, Motherhood Incorporated, Military Mom Talk Radio

I am not an inexhaustible resource. I didn’t say these words until I turned 40. I really think that before my life collapsed I really truly thought I could do anything I set my mind to, that I would find the time in my day to do the things that were important to me and I would somehow find the ways and means to get my programs, ideas and books out there.

Yeah right.

Two premature babies later. One mom buried. Two dogs cremated. One foreclosure, two liquidated cars and to just top it off, I gained back the 25 pounds that took FOREVER to lose.

I used to hear people say things like “you need to take care of yourself,” “you need to put yourself first,” and “you need to be at the top of your ‘to-do’ list.”  I checked all my lists and my day planner and the only place I could find something that even related to me personally was on the bottom of my grocery list under the pseudonym “chocolate bars.”

Even that was scratched off most weeks as the scale continued to climb.

It was only when I fell apart after my divorce. That pitiful time where I cried every day at least once for 43 straight days. Was I depressed? Probably. Did I medicate? Probably should have but didn’t. I simply felt every feeling that was bottled up in the past 15 years and it all had to come out.  Once that storm passed, I felt drained – inside and out.

It was then that I had to pick up the pieces of my life and rebuild. It was then and only then that those phrases above got through my thick head. I needed to take care of myself first. My mom was dead. My husband left. There were took kids looking at me from bouncy seat and high chair respectively and they needed someone who could do this.

I read a book about the proper care and feeing of husbands and all I could think about what about the proper care and feeding of me? I started scribbling all my little ditties about what I needed to do and when Dr. Laura said it’s the wife’s responsibility to set her time so that she can take care of her husband and her children a light went on. I realized that it’s not my responsibility for them but for me!

I am not an inexhaustible resource for school functions, soccer leagues, church events, kids clothing, yard sales and whatever is on my plate this week. So every Sunday night after the kids go to bed I write down in my planner what I can do this week. Not what I need to do, not what I am guilted in to doing and not what I think I should be doing because my expectations of myself are unrealistic at best.

I also write down every week in my planner three things:

I am not an inexhaustible resource.

I have the same 24 hours as everyone else.

The world will not fall apart if I say no.

I hope you learn from me and don’t wait 40 years for this to sink in. But if you do, and you wait to 40, 50 or 60 you will be fine – just tired, cranky and overworked but fine. Because we all learn what we need to learn just at the point we need to learn it most.

You Bet Your Boots by Sandra Beck, Military Mom Talk Radio

As the host of a popular radio show I am often asked about issues pertaining to the military family and for the purposes of this blog series I would like educate the public and honor the military family so they can be seen in the exceptional light that I see which is missed by most of the civilian population.

When you take a closer look at the military family, you see that in many ways resiliency is a way of life. Resiliency as defined as the ability to bounce back from change, adversity and disappointment is the epitome of the career military family.  Not enough attention is paid to this amazing characteristic that is honed by PCS moves, working through government red tape and following as a family the orders set down by military protocol.

When you stop to think about a married soldier on deployment, it’s hard not to think of the family he or she left behind to do their duty. Our unsung heroes, the spouse and children are left to carry on, to do the job of both parents, to manage disappointment, fear, loss, loneliness and change. They do that day in and day out.

Children learn to live without one parent for months and months. They move from place to place making new friends, creating new lives all during the business of growing up. Our military spouses take on a new role as single parent – except there is no seeking out a new mate to pair up and ease the burden.  There are lonely frightening nights and long task filled days.

And here is the quiet resiliency. Day after day the military family shows up. They respond, they regroup, they rework the family system and they keep going. This to me is resiliency. So yes, when people as me about the military family I cite them as the classic case of resiliency.  They are a beautiful shining example of resilient living. I am always amazed at the clever solutions, the brilliant brainstorms and the superior attitude of our military moms and dads braving the home front and keeping the home fires burning until their loved one returns home.

So when asked is a military family is resilient, I have only one answer.  You bet your boots.

Burning Daylight, by Sandra Beck, Military Mom Talk Radio

One time I was sitting in a leadership seminar and the Commander teaching the course looked directly at me.  “You have the same 24 hours in day as me- What are you doing with your time?”

I thought about what he said. I thought about how I was actually thinking if Batman paired up with Superman and Wonder Woman with their 70s technology who could they defeat in present day? Will Smith in Independence Day? The Bourne Guys? Tom Cruise in MI 1 maybe but definitely not 3. What a colossal waste of my brain that discussion was regarding super heroes. But I was smart enough not to answer the question truthfully.

I did take away the 24 hour rule. I thought about how many times my USMC buddy would run behind me when we would train yelling “C’mon Beck! We’re burning daylight, Girl move!!!”  I would run faster but it didn’t hit me until recently that I have a choice in how I spend my day. I really never thought that being a full time working single mom with two active elementary school age kids.  It was always do, do, do…go, go, go…but where was I going? And I mean personally, not to the grocery store to collect the endless gallons of milk that seem to stream through my children.

I look back at all that I have accomplished. I’ve written books. I’ve hosted a radio show for three years.  I have built charities from the ground up. I have raised my boys to grow into great leaders of men and women. But at the end of the day, if you ask me what I have gotten the most satisfaction from it’s an easy answer. I get a true heartfelt joy from serving my country in my own way with my own skills.  In serving my country I am serving my family, my friends and the country I love.

Did I fight in a war? Nope.  I am a flag waving civilian? Yes.  Do I make a difference…? Absolutely! You see I wrote this article because I have a great friend who was bounced out of the Army on a MEPS error. Because he’s not behind the barrel of a gun, or in uniform or pounding the ground he doesn’t think he can serve his country.

I am here to state clearly that there are many ways to serve and not one is better than another in the hearts of men and women – it’s the difference we make at the end of the day.  Today I ask you – you’re burning daylight…you have the same 24 hours as me….what are you doing with your time?

Battle Parents by Sandra Beck, Military Mom Talk Radio

It takes a lot to impress me with new ideas. I’ll be honest with over 300 radio shows under my belt pertaining to military and motherhood, I think I have heard everything. Then an idea pops out from an unlikely place from an unlikely person.  No, it’s not a shrink or a counselor or a decorated veteran. It came from a mom. From a mom who started a small Facebook group called PODS – Parents of Deployed Service Members.

This group is private and has about 1500 members. I had the pleasure of meeting Marcella Stretch the founder and she came up with a great idea recently. You see in Battle – we have Battle Buddies. Those promised to be at our side and watch our back and take care of us when we need them.

Marcella Stretch came up with the concept of Battle Parents.  This is a unique and powerful concept because it allows our parents of military service members to bond and support each other in ways that no one else can. If you are a service member, encourage your mom or dad to get a Battle Parent.

See a Battle Parent promises to be at their side and watch their back and take care of them when needed. Parents of our service men and women take on a unique role.  The love their children and knowingly support them as they put themselves in harm’s way for our country.  Are they proud? Damn Proud! Are they scared? Every day.

As a parent you worry about your kids their whole live. No matter how old you are, if your parents are still alive they worry about you. You can’t support them sure, but you have a job to do. You have a mission. That’s why Battle Parents need to band together, form alliances and share information.

This is especially important when a Battle Parent’s adult child goes on their first deployment, goes to basic or transfers to a new area.  The parents worry and one of the best ways to help your parents is to provide them with real information from real parents who have gone or are going through the same thing.

I watch Battle Parents in action. One child is injured or lost – Battle Parents rush in to support the grieving parent. One child is coming home – Battle Parents rush in to celebrate.  Parents get tired. Parents get scared. Parents get confused.  Together we are stronger and our Military Parents – the PODS – Parents of Deployed Service members can band together and life all of us up.

So Parents – get a Battle Parent. You can find them online.  Service men and women encourage your Mom or Dad to get their Battle Buddy – their own Battle Parent.  And Marcella Stretch of PODS – thank you for giving a name to this outstanding concept of parents supporting parents while their adult children are on deployment – as well as before and after.
