Motherhood Talk Radio Hosted by Sandra Beck Welcomes the Cancer Treatment Centers of America Tuesday Sept. 11

Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) is a growing network of privately held hospitals that provide a comprehensive, fully integrated and individualized cancer treatment experience. CTCA regional destination hospitals are located in Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Tulsa. The CTCA growth goal is to reach more cancer patients by offering six regional hospitals located within 300 miles of approximately 80 percent of the U.S. population.

History
Cancer Treatment Centers of America was founded in 1988 by Richard J Stephenson. Stephenson was disappointed with the impersonal and insensitive cancer care his mother, Mary Brown Stephenson, received. When she lost her battle with cancer in 1982, Stephenson set out to change the face of cancer care. Stephenson’s commitment to creating a truly patient-centered cancer treatment experience has been the organization’s guiding principle ever since.

The Mother Standard®
CTCA promises that the treatment, quality of life and service needs of every patient will be at the center of the hearts, minds and actions of its staff every day. At CTCA, patients find accomplished physicians who specialize in caring for people living with advanced and complex cancer, along with experienced nutritionists, naturopathic doctors, mind-body therapists, spiritual counselors and other clinicians who provide quality-of-life support. Collectively they work to address the individual needs of patients, as if each patient was his or her own mother or loved one. They ask themselves: “If my mother had cancer, how would I want her to be treated?” That simple question has evolved into the CTCA Mother Standardof care, a unique, vibrant approach that delivers a complete, quality treatment experience based on what cancer patients and their families value most.

The Mother Standard of care allows CTCA clinicians to offer cancer patients the latest, evidence-based treatments to fight cancer, combined with a comprehensive array of scientifically supported complementary medical therapies to strengthen the immune system, ease side effects and improve quality of life.

Motherhood Talk Radio Continues its Women’s Health Series with Cancer Survivors Mary-Ann Sullivan and Tracie Kimbrough, ACS volunteer

Motherhood Talk Radio hosted by Sandra Beck welcomes series contributor Robin Boyd, continuing their Women’s Health series today focusing on Living With and Surviving Cancer.

“My name is Mary-Ann Sullivan.  I’m very grateful to wake up every day on the “right side of the grass”. I am 57 years old and have only taught military children for my almost 35 years as a teacher. I have had the great fortune of teaching across the United States, accompanying my husband as he proudly served our military as a navigator for the Air Force. I am a strong supporter of our military personnel and their families, and focus much of my volunteer time on Veterans. I was initially diagnosed in 1998 and have since battled metastatic breast cancer to my lungs and my brain. When I was first diagnosed, my son was 12 and my daughter was 17. Last year, I tested positive for the BRCA gene and made the decision to have a double mastectomy with reconstruction. Through all of this my family and friends have been a great source of support and comfort. Basically, I owe my life to Massachusetts General Hospital and my faith in God.”

Tracie Kimbrough is a breast cancer survivor, single mom, and a volunteer with the American Cancer Society.  Tracie has volunteered since 2008 as a Reach To Recovery Volunteer, and is also the event chair for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of San Fernando Valley.

The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, the ACS has 12 chartered Divisions, more than 900 local offices nationwide, and a presence in more than 5,100 communities.  Resources are available to anyone needing support and guidance during their difficult journey.

Achieving clarity in all 5 carats insures she will shine just like a perfect-cut diamond.

The Real Cougar woman realizes that she, and she alone, is responsible for everything in her life.   Just like an artist, she sits in front of a blank canvas every day and creates her reality.

Being a 5-carat diamond allows her to be:

  • A woman who isn’t afraid to knock down walls and crash through glass ceilings.
  • A woman who adores men but refuses to be defined by the age of the man she chooses to be with.
  • A woman who goes inside herself for the answers.
  • A woman who knows how to keep her body healthy, her beauty radiant and her spiritual reservoir full.
  • A woman who puts financial freedom high on her priority list.

Linda retells her story, “Every woman, whether she realizes it or not, has a Real Cougar just waiting to be unleashed. Living your life as a smart, sexy, independent woman is the best gift you can give yourself. So get over listening to what other people think you should do and start living the life you deserve.  This is the time to let go of your preconceived notions about aging, about sexuality, about beauty, about relationships with money, and give yourself permission to explore all of your possibilities.

I know many women think that a cougar is a derogatory word used to describe women who  prefer younger men.  Nothing could be further from the truth. A Real Cougar, a term I coined in 2007, is any woman over 40 who is turned on and excited about life.

The Real Cougar Woman is a fabulous female who is reconstructing the role of women today and will continue to do so for many years to come.

Achieving the rank of Real Cougar is a privilege, never an embarrassment.  You have worked hard to earn your stripes, so be proud to revel in your accomplishments.  For far too long, women over 40 have been pushed to the sidelines. You are mothers, business executives, entrepreneurs and teachers. You are a million things, but not the complete woman you have always wanted to be.  Now is the time to change all that.

Now is the time to realize your brilliance.  If not now – when?

I was born inToronto,Canada and moved toNew York Cityin my early twenties.  Never having finished college, I worked as a secretary because that’s all I thought I was qualified to do.

Wall Street in the late 70’s was not a woman friendly environment but I used that to my advantage.  At age 28 I walked into my boss’s office and asked to work in the firm’s trading department.  He said yes, but it came with a very big caveat.  He said, “make it or be fired”.  That challenge made me determined to succeed and I did.  I was the first Canadian woman to own a seat on The New York Stock Exchange and then went on to manage this leading investment firm’s all male trading department.

Then at 48 my life changed drastically.  Due to a number of circumstances I decided to leave Wall Street.  That transition was a devastating blow to my psyche.  I didn’t realize how much of my identity I had attached to my work.  Retirement had never been a thought in my mind and I  had no idea of how to cope with not having a good reason to get up in the morning.

When I could no longer stand wallowing in self pity, I made the conscious decision to take back my power and my life. Over the next two years, I went on a quest to find the answers that would help me with my relationships, maintaining a healthy body, looking fabulous, starting a new career and filling my spiritual reservoir.   That journey, as tough as it was, turned out to be a blessing.  It re-ignited my passion and allowed me to get excited about act two of my life.

Wanting to share what I had learned I started a blog.  People ask me all the time why I decided to call it the The Real Cougar Woman.

It wasn’t planned – it just happened after I started to read a slew of unflattering articles about women over 40.  They were being called “cougars”, and portrayed as predators on the prowl for young men. This negative spin upset me and  I wanted to focus on the many virtues of real women not the media’s idea of women over 40.  So I coined the term Real Cougar as  my way of celebrating our age, our accomplishments, our independence, and our passion for life.  I make it clear that a Real Cougar refuses to be defined by the age of the man she chooses to be with.  Today, three years later I am still doing everything I can to make “cougar” a designer label that women all over the world are proud to wear.

My best selling book Don’t Ever Call Me Ma’am! – The Real Cougar Guidebook for Life After 40 is helping me to expand my message.  It has important information that every woman needs to read.  I have also included inspiring stories from other fabulous females that truly warmed my heart.  It let me know we are all together on this journey through time.

My newest initiative is “The Combat Cougars”. This is my outreach to support women in the military.  Like most worthwhile ventures it wasn’t planned.  After receiving emails from military women ‘combat cougars’ who felt empowered after reading my blog – the path seemed obvious.”

Motherhood Talk Radio welcomes Patricia Mellor, CEO of the Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains

By Motherhood Incorporated, Motherhood Talk RadioMotherhood Talk Radio hosted by Sandra Beck and co-hosted by Robin Boyd welcome Patricia Mellor, CEO of the Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains

This week marks the 100th anniversary of the dream of one woman hoping to make a difference in the world.  In March of 1912, Juliette Gordon Low gathered 18 girls to begin what we now know as the Girl Scouts of the USA.  She believed that all girls should be given the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. Almost immediately, Juliette’s dream for a girl-centered organization was realized. Today, Girl Scouts of the USA has a membership of over 3.2 million girls and adults in every residential zip code and in 90 countries. Nearly 60 million living women in the U.S. today are Girl Scout alumnae.

Motherhood Talk Radio, Motherhood Incorporated, Motherhood Company, Sandra Beck, Christy Holly, Robin Boyd, Doris Rivas Brekke, Patricia Mellor, Girl Scouts, Girl Scouts of the USA, GSGWM, Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains, Girl Scouting,Series contributor Robin Boyd joins Sandra to welcome Patricia Mellor, CEO of the Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains Council, serving more than 15,000 girls in New Hampshire and Vermont and over 5,000 adult volunteer members.  Tricia, herself, was a girl member, achieving Girl Scouting’s highest honor, the Gold Award, followed by serving as an adult leader and camp councilor.  We could also spell that “counselor”, as Tricia is a member of the NH Bar Association and was a founding member of law firm, Merra, Kanakis, Creme & Mellor before becoming GSGWM’s chief executive officer.

Tricia embodies the Girl Scout mission, to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.  No one can attend an event led by Tricia and not leave it ready to ignite the world!  She advocates that changing the landscape for women’s leadership tomorrow means helping every girl reach her full potential today.  Every girl has a voice, and the Girl Scout’s innovative leadership programs help girls discover, connect and take action as they develop strong values, a social conscience, and a deep sense of self and their potential.

This year, in a move designed to focus national attention on girls and the issues they face, Girl Scouts of the USA has announced the launch of ToGetHerThere, the largest, boldest advocacy and fundraising cause dedicated to girls’ leadership in the nation’s history. The multi-year effort will seek to create balanced leadership — the equal representation of women in leadership positions in all sectors and levels of society — within one generation.

Tracy Costan of Motherhood Talk Radio

Tracey first started taking belly dance classes in 1998 at Anisa’sSchoolofDancein Sherman Oaks. From the very beginning, she fell in love with music, the costumes and the dance itself. With no prior formal dance training she trudged along trying to keep up with all the dance moves and the timing  but after a few months, I got the hang of it and was taking up to 3 classes a week.

She eventually started performing in restaurants and bellydance events throughoutSouthern Californiawhile always taking dance workshops at UCLA and at the dance school by visiting professional dancers from around the world. She danced even through her pregnancies and eventually moved out toActon5 years ago and began teaching classes out of her home. “

“I have been teaching enrichment classes at the local schools for 2 years now and enjoy teaching  this age group. I try to incorporate  a unique style of modern Egyptian, Arabic and Spanish dance moves into my choreographies. I like using a variety of music, dance moves and musicians for performances. My goal is to teach this very feminine, beautiful and difficult dance in a community that has never experienced this before,” Tracey shared recently.

Donna can be found serving on local community boards, spoiling five ridiculously smart and funny nieces, and answering to the unreasonable demands of her little white dog Bella and her little black cat Boo.  Donna is a published writer whose work has appeared in a variety of publications including The Washington Post, The Northwest Current and publications far more dry than the Internal Revenue Code.

Donna is currently writing (and drawing) Reply All, a daily comic strip syndicated by the Washington Post Writers Group.

Big Table Farm is the collaborative effort of Brian Marcy and Clare Carver.
We are a winemaker and an artist, we grow and produce what we love to eat and drink.

The farm and winery is named after their desire to provide a gracious and welcoming table for themselves and friends, with a cornucopia of hand-crafted food and wine. Ambitious as it is, they have launched a winery and are establishing a working farm, where they raise pasture poultry, pigs, cows, and egg-laying chickens. Brian and Clare also keep a large garden, working towards a managed intensive grazing system of farming that builds the soil, sequesters carbon, and moves towards a healthy, sustainable and diverse farm.

In addition to partnering with Brian to market the wine and manage their 70 acres, Clare is also a painter and wine label designer. Clare’s fine art is represented in Galleries in San Francisco and Sonoma and now in Carlton OR. Clare has designed wine labels for over 50 wineries from Oregon, California and Washington. Her labels have recieved multiple awards including america’s top ten wine labels (S.F.  Chronicle, ’06) her winery clients inculde (just to name a few) Beaux Freres, Delicato Family Vineyards, Grace Family Vineyards, Miner Family Vineyards, Patton Valley Vineyards, Resonance Vineyards, Love and Squalor Winery and Phelps Creek Vineyards.
